The reasons for an unsettled and crying baby are better informed by taking a detailed history (with consent) and observing a full breastfeed. This may take 1 - 2 hours. Each mother and baby is unique, therefore a detailed history is important to problem solving possible reasons for the unsettled crying baby.
Some of the common things that were observed in Robyn's practice were:
Feeding your baby from only one breast per feed
Feeding your baby too frequently
Maternal swallowing of some supplements that were identified as common denominators (see below)
Sometimes, you may not be aware that something you are swallowing or taking every day (a common denominator) may be potent in the taste and/or smell of your breast milk. For example, vitamin supplements, herbal remedies or powdered drinks. It may be wise to carefully consider what you are swallowing and if you suspect something could be the problem, minimize or regulate one thing at a time and allow at least 48 hours to observe if your baby starts to settle.
