The Gentle Approach That’s Helping Thousands of Women Breastfeed With Confidence

Breastfeeding can feel like one of the most natural things in the world—until you’re told it’s not working.

If you’ve ever been told your baby isn’t getting enough...
Or that you don't have enough milk to nourish your baby...
If you’ve felt the heartbreak of being told your milk supply is too low

You're not alone. And you are not failing.

The truth is, many mothers are given this label too quickly, often based on rushed hospital practices—not their body’s actual capacity to nourish.

"I was told my milk wasn’t enough… but it turns out, my body just needed time, support, and a little trust." ~ Sarah

Why So Many Women Are Told They Have Low Milk Supply

Dr Robyn Thompson (PhD), an experienced midwife and breastfeeding consultant, dedicated over 50 years walking beside women through their birth and breastfeeding journeys.

In her PhD research, she found that more than 60% of mothers who experienced breastfeeding complications were given cow's milk formula, before being discharged from hospital—often unnecessarily.

While for some mothers and babies, formula may be a benefit, often it is introduced just so the hospital can move toward early discharge. But for most healthy newborns with an APGAR score of 7 or above, the early introduction of formula is not necessary—and can (often does) disrupt the natural rhythm of milk production.

What Most Mothers Aren’t Told About Milk Supply

Contrary to popular belief:

  • Your breasts don’t need to feel “full” to be producing enough.
  • Your colostrum is low in volume but rich in nutrients—it’s enough.
  • Your milk supply will gradually increase over the first 72–96 hours following the birth of your baby (sometimes a little longer after a C-Section).
  • Your baby’s stomach is tiny (round about the size of their closed fist), and frequent feeding in the early days is nature’s way of establishing your breast milk production.

“Milk supply is about regular, rhythmical hormone stimulation—not pressure. Not pumping. Not panic.” ~ Dr Robyn Thompson, PhD

By understanding how milk production really works, mothers like you can make informed decisions and avoid unnecessary interventions, particularly in the early hours, days and weeks of breastfeeding.

The Power of the First Breastfeed (The 3 Golden Hours)

Dr Robyn discovered that the most common breastfeeding complications—like low milk supply, nipple pain, mastitis and latch issues—often begin with an interrupted or delayed first breastfeed.

That’s why she developed the concept of The 3 Golden HoursThe precious first few hours after the birth of your baby when uninterrupted skin-to-skin and instinctive breastfeeding can significantly reduce the risk of complications.

But in many hospital settings, these hours are often interrupted for weighing, wiping, injecting, and measuring—before breastfeeding is properly established.

“If your baby is healthy, and you are well, those procedures can wait. You have the right to hold your baby in your arms.” ~ Dr Robyn

Sarah’s Story: From Fear to Confidence

After a long labour, Sarah’s baby wasn’t settling. The nurses suggested her milk hadn’t come in—and formula was introduced.

“I felt like I was failing before I’d even started,” she recalls.

But when she discovered The Thompson Method, she realised her body wasn’t broken. It simply hadn’t been given the time—or the support—to do what it was naturally designed to do.

Today, she breastfeeds confidently and pain-free.
